Measurement introduction

Measurement

Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something.
We can measure ...
guitar length

Length

Length is how far from end to end. Also called Distance.
The length of this guitar is about 1 metre (slightly more than 1 yard).

liter water

Volume

Volume is the amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies. Also called Capacity.
This jug has exactly 1 litre of water in it (slightly more than 2 pints)

Mass (Weight)

Mass is how much matter something contains.
This bar of Gold has a Mass of 1 kilogram (slightly more than 2 pounds)
(Weight is "Heaviness" ... the downward force caused by gravity on an object.)
1 kilogram

LET'S EXPLORE LENGTH

Length

carpenter's rule
Measuring how long things are, how tall they are, or how far apart they might be are all examples of length measurements.

Metric units of length review (mm, cm, m, & km)

  • Millimetres
  • Centimetres
  • Metres
  • Kilometres

id card
Small units of length are called millimetres.
A millimetre is about the thickness of a plastic id card (or credit card).
Or about the thickness of 10 sheets of paper on top of each other.
This is a very small measurement!

Centimetres

fingers
When you have something that is 10 millimetres, it can be said that it is 1 centimetre.
1 centimetre = 10 millimetres
A fingernail is about one centimetre wide.
We can use millimetres or centimetres to measure how tall we are, or how wide a table is, but to measure the length of football field it is better to use metres.

Metres

1 meter
A metre is equal to 100 centimetres.
1 metre = 100 centimetres
The length of this guitar is about 1 metre
Metres might be used to measure the length of a house, or the size of a playground.

Kilometres

roads
When you need to get from one place to another, you will need to measure that distance using kilometres. A kilometre is equal to 1,000 metres.
The distance from one city to another or how far a plane travels are measured using kilometres.

Final thoughts about measuring length:
1 centimetre = 10 millimetres
1 metre = 100 centimetres
1 kilometre = 1000 metres

MaggieI hope you enjoyed learning all about metric measurement.
Now I must return home. Keep measuring until I see you again!!!!!!!!!
